Children Demonstrating Heaven on Earth

Updated: 7 hours ago

Today, I sat at the kitchen table to write. I had no idea what I was going to say.

I had my sliding glass door open facing the boys playing outside. However, Eli kept going off behind some trees where I couldn't see him. Of course, little bro was quick to follow behind. I kept having to stop and call him over to where I could see him.

Why was he doing this?

Eventually, I slowed down to figure it out. The trees were magic. In the cover of the trees, they could create, and the space could become anything they wanted it to be. I suddenly remembered feeling that feeling as a child.

Little things like hiding in the cover of trees made whole other worlds come alive.

Kids are wondrous. They slow down and find the dreaminess in things. A blanket fort becomes Spiderman's webquarters. Dad's socks over shoes becomes professional football player cleats. A discarded piece of wood becomes a drum stick. Belly laughter is a daily activity.

Matthew 18:3 says, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven."

The Bible tells us in Matthew 10:7 that, "the kingdom of heaven is at hand." "At hand." That means now.

Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6. "Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." We are to pray for earth to be like heaven. That strikes me.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 18:3 how to make earth like heaven. Be like children. In my observations, children are innocent, loving, joyful, full of wonder. Their solutions to problems are practical and not over complicated. Their faith is immeasurable.

I hope my kids always keep their curiosity, awe, and sense of marvel.

I'm thankful for my kids and their demonstration of heaven here on earth for me this morning.
